PIC Programmers
Traps for the unwary: does it come with an assembler and programming
software? If not, where do you get them. Is there technical support? Does it
have on-board firmware which will need upgrading (at a price) when new devices
are released? Are a PCB and components provided or do you have to make your
own? (What use is free software if you have to make and produce your own PCB?)
Remember the more 'free' it is, the less support you will probably get.
If you are a beginner then start with the PIC16F84 and just get a beginners
programmer. The first 3 links below are beginners programmers. Any are
suitable.
- Bojan Dobaj
P16PRO & PICALL programmers. As sold in Kits CPS96 CPS117
& CPS119. Well supported. Beginners buy CPS119.
- PIC programmers. Octavio
Nogueira. Well built beginners programmers. Supported. (Copied some of
Bojans ideas but that is what happens these days.)
- Covington 'no
components' PIC Programmer. Published in Electronics Now, 9/98 &
Silicon Chip, 3/99. Not guaranteed to work on all parallel ports but will
probably work on yours.
- Don McKenzie. SIMMstick. Well
supported. Not for beginners
